Are you interested in volunteering in a senior role? Would you like Conference Committee experience? To apply to sit on the FLC 2010 Committee, please fill out this form.
These five positions are excellent chances for students to gain Conference experience and contribute to the academic community in a fun, lively, self-directed environment.
- Administrative Officer: In this role, you will assist the Chief Volunteer Coordinator directly as required, being responsible for such tasks as Registration and the Volunteer Schedule, among many others. Ideally you will have some team management experience to assist you in directing volunteers. (Approximately 5 hours per week, plus the weekend of the Conference itself).
- Programme Coordinator: In this role, you will coordinate the Abstract Review, collate the Programme (including management of the timetable), and format the programme using a program such as InDesign, finally overseeing the printing of the programmes within budget. (Approximately 5 hours per week, and must be available Saturday 14 August).
- Media/PR Coordinator: In this role, you will oversee all publicity and media contact for the Conference. You will be responsible for calls for papers, volunteers, and registrations. You will organise publicity over various channels such as the Conference and university websites, relevant mailing lists and newsletters, and social and print media, as required. (Approximately 2 hours per week).
- Sponsorship Coordinator: In this role, you will ensure the Conference receives adequate sponsorship, primarily in the form of advertisements within the programme (to support its production), and in-kind donations (such as the provision of Conference bags and raffle items). (Approximately 2 hours per week, primarily in Semester 1).
- Technical Officer: In this role, you will primarily be responsible for maintaining the Conference website and solving technical issues as they arise during the Conference. You may also be required to assist or instruct in the production of the Programme in its preparation for print. (Approximately 2 hours per week, plus the weekend of the Conference itself).
We have purposefully divided the roles, as carefully as possible, to make them easily-manageable for students. The suggested time commitments in large part would not begin until Semester 2; in Semester 1, all positions need only be available for two hours per week, including fortnightly, hour-long meetings from the end of April until Stuvac.
The positions filled on the Committee to date include Chief Volunteer Coordinator, and Catering and Hospitality Manager. Ex-Officio positions include the Conference Convenors, Ahmar Mahboob and Naomi Knight, and representatives from the Sydney University Linguistics Society.
These Committee positions would best suit undergraduate and postgraduate students. Please note however that positions on the Abstract Review Committee (to be advertised later in the year) must be filled by academics.
Applications for Committee have been extended to close at 5pm AEST, Saturday May 1st 2010.
We will also be advertising for volunteer positions closer to the Conference, to assist from late September until the Conference.
